Frequently asked questions

Is my damaged PDF uploaded?

No. The file is read and rebuilt in your browser tab. Nothing is sent anywhere, which matters most for files you cannot open to check what is inside.

What kinds of damage can it fix?

Broken or missing cross-reference tables, wrong pointers, junk before the PDF header, a missing end of file, damaged object streams, streams with the wrong length, a destroyed document catalog, and downloads that were cut short.

How does it decide which repair to keep?

It runs three independent rebuilds: a structural re-save that keeps bookmarks and forms, a salvage that rebuilds the page list from the pages that survived, and a rebuild from what a PDF reader can still see. Each result is reopened and the one with the most readable pages and text wins.

Can it bring back pages that are not in the file any more?

No tool can. If a download stopped early, the missing pages are simply not there. Repair keeps every page that survived, leaves out pages that were cut off, and tells you how many.

Does it work on password-protected PDFs?

Remove the password first with Unlock PDF, then repair the unlocked copy.
